Dr. Muhammed Abdul Hakkim Azhari

Dr. Muhammed Abdul Hakkim Kandi Al-Azhari (born 20 February 1971) is a distinguished scholar, educator, author, and advisor to numerous humanitarian and philanthropic initiatives. He is the son of Sheikh Abubakr Ahmed, the Grand Mufti of India, and belongs to a family renowned for its longstanding legacy of Islamic scholarship and community leadership.

His academic journey reflects a rare synthesis of traditional Islamic learning and modern academic excellence. After memorizing the Holy Qur'an and completing his foundational Islamic studies at Jamia Markaz, Kozhikode, he pursued advanced studies in Islamic theology, followed by postgraduate studies in Urdu Language and Literature at Bangalore University. He further completed specialized training in community leadership and earned a Ph.D. in Urdu from Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Bihar University. His scholarly formation was enriched through advanced specialization at Al-Azhar University, Cairo, one of the world's most prestigious centers of Islamic learning.

Distinguished by his extensive expertise across both traditional and contemporary disciplines, Dr. Azhari has dedicated his life to the advancement of education, social development, and humanitarian service. As a pioneering institutional leader, Dr. Azhari has played a transformative role in shaping the educational landscape of India. He serves as the Rector of Jamia Markaz, overseeing one of the country's leading Islamic educational institutions, which manages more than 50 subsidiary centers and directly benefits over 20,000 students globally. His leadership extends to his role as the Managing Director of Markaz Knowledge City, a comprehensive development project integrating education, healthcare, scholarship, and commerce, generating thousands of employment opportunities and contributing significantly to regional development in South India. In addition, as Chief of the Islamic Education Board of India, he oversees a vast educational network comprising approximately 15,000 schools and institutions, helping shape the holistic education of more than half a million students across the nation.

Beyond his contributions to education, Dr. Azhari has emerged as a leading figure in social welfare, youth development, and intercultural engagement. He actively champions youth empowerment and poverty alleviation through his service as President of the Sunni Yuvajana Sangham (SYS) and General Secretary of the Relief and Charitable Foundation of India (RCFI). Through these and numerous other initiatives, he has contributed to a wide range of humanitarian, charitable, and community-development projects.

A prolific author and public intellectual, Dr. Azhari has written more than twenty books on Islamic thought, ethics, spirituality, and contemporary social issues. Among his most acclaimed works is Anudhavanathinte Aanandham (The Joy of Emulation), a Malayalam study of the Prophetic character that has sold over 20,000 copies and reached a wide international readership through translations into six languages.

Recognized internationally for his enduring contributions to education, scholarship, and humanitarian service, Dr. Azhari is frequently invited to address global conferences, academic forums, and international symposiums. As Chief Imam, he serves as the spiritual head of one of India's largest mosques located within Markaz Knowledge City. With the capacity to accommodate twenty five thousand worshippers, the Masjid blends Indian, Persian, and classical Islamic architectural traditions.
